I’ve been thinking a lot lately about ethics and the economic privileges we must have in order to create and shop ethical. It saddens me deeply that ethics often costs so much for brands and consumers, and more affordable production costs the people producing our garments with their quality of life. This week is ‘Fashion Revolution’ Week where you’ll see lots of brands posting pics with their machinists who are smiling and holding signs that say “I Made your clothes”. This movement was born from the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 where over 1000 workers were killed in Bangladesh in a factory building inspectors had warned was structurally unsafe to work in the day before. Staff were ordered to come in and work or loose their months wage. This is a familiar story in a world where economically underdeveloped countries produce products at low cost for privileged markets, keeping workers chained to a lifetime of poverty where the living wage is often higher than the minimum wage. The blind eye we turn to this issue is nuanced with classism and racism. On the flip side its a real struggle to shop ethically if you are on a low income. A $5 Kmart tee is so much more affordable than a $70 tee when you are prioritising your own basic needs and/or that of your children. The more aware you become of how things are made the deeper the cognitive dissonance. As a maker ethics adds to the bottom line. Any ethical small business will tell you ethical production is expensive. Often the cost to produce one of my garments is more than the price of a dress you would see hanging on a rack at a chain store. For me it’s a choice to produce ethically. Its also a privilege that I live in a country where there are enough people that prioritise and have the means to buy my garments. I hope that the more of these conversations we have the more even the playing field will become. Asking “Who made your clothes” is a good place to start, but know that if you can’t afford ethical fashion you need not feel ashamed! BTW…. I make your clothes in my Northcote studio. I have 2 machinists who I outsource to when the workload is too much. They choose their own fees and work in homely comfort!

The luxurious Merino wool. Our fave fiber that says: ‘I’m warm, and I have high standards.’ Contrary to rumour, Merino is super soft against the skin, as the fibre itself is 50% - 75% smaller in diameter than other wools. This gives maximum warmth for negative itch! It's a fine, wicking fibre, which means it pulls moisture away from your skin by absorbing it into the fibres. The moisture then moves through the fabric and evaporates through the exterior, acting as a layer of warmth in winter, and a cooling fabric in summer! Due to this wick it doesn't get smelly like synthetic or cellulose fibres... goodbye to your favorite outfit being in the laundry basket! Our merinos are super high quality and milled in Aotearoa from non-mulsed sheep. This means that the wool was shorn off the sheep and not ripped off as happens in some merino wool production. We've made merino wool dresses and bodysuits in our figure celebrating Sweetheart Babylon shape so you can enjoy the quality of these classic pieces for years to come! Future heirlooms they say!
